HP G42-230US Review

The HP G42-230US is available at walmart for $648 at the time of writing.  Staples is selling at  $479 after taking into account the $200 rebate. It is unclear how long the rebate will last.  Amazon has it for $641.03. Apparently Staples offer the best price, if you take into account the rebates offered.  The price at newegg is $548 plus changes according to starredreviews.

The  HP G42-230US features AMD Turion II dual-core processor P520 that works at 2.30 GHz  and has 2MB L2 Cache. The dual core Turion processors were designed to compete with the Intel’s core 2 processors and AMD was successful in warding of the competition from Intel with Turion II series of the processors. Fabricated on the 65nm technology, the Turion processors have integrated memory controller which combined with the HyperTransport bus gives out decent performance. The HyperTransport Bus is used to communicate with the chipset which further communicates with peripheral ICs.  Taking just 35 Watts the Turion processors have been very popular with the notebook designers and manufacturers.

The HP G42-230US notebook has 4 GB of DDR3 memory and is sufficient for most of your requirements in daily work. If you are into gaming, your may like to explore the latest  AMD’s Phenom II based notebooks or the intel’s core i7 based notebooks.

As far as the graphics is concerned, the HP G42-230US comes with onboard graphics using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. The onboard graphics has 1917MB total graphics memory.

The HP G42-230US comes with 14 inch display with 1366×768 widesceeen resolution.  The LED based backlight provides efficient and bright color.
Looking into the Hard Disk Drive,   G42-230us features 320GB SATA memory. Note that  this SATA drive is  7,200 rpm which provides faster data transfer rate from the hard disk to as compared to the one with 5,400 rpm.

As far as the operating system is concerned the HP G42-230US comes with  Windows 7 home premium 64bit.

The  HP G42-230US includes all the common ports including  3 USB 2.0 ports, DVD writer, single VGA. Also noteworthy is the presence of the  HDMI port. It does come with 5-1 one card reader-SD, MMC, MS, XD, MS pro which could be useful for quick data transfer from your digital cameras.

Apart from the  wired networking connection, the connection  G42-230US  has inbuilt support for  wireless networking  with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The battery is  6 cell, 47 Watt Hour,  lithium ion battery which has a rated life of up to 4 hours, 15 minutes according to the specification listed in Staples. The small size ( 14 inch) and the good battery life makes this notebook ideal for the mobile personals.

The shortcomings

Nothing is special but you may like to note that it does not has cutting age Phenom II AMD processor or the i7 based intel processor. No may not be suitable for your gaming requirements – in case you need high processing and graphic capability. Also it does not has bluetooth support in case you plan to use one.

Final Conclusion

HP G42-230US is a a notebook for budget conscious customers who want a decent notebooks with HDMI display capability.  If you can do without bluetooth ( and most of you can ), this notebooks is worth every dollar you spend. If you are however a developer, or a gaming enthusiast, you may like to look for the hex core AMD’s Phenom II based notebooks.
