Palm, the ailing mobile phone company released Pixi, the new sleek phone that comes in the category of the sm

Front and Look

Palm Pixi has a 2.63 inches LCD with  Capacitive touchscreen. The capacitive touchscreen allows you to use two fingers simultaneously, unlike the resistive touchscreens. The tiny QWERTY board on the front, arranged in four rows, in a great addition to the phone making typing and editing easy. On the top side is power and sleep button and headphone jack. On the right hand side is a volume control rocker and a MicroUSB port. The MicroUSB port is elegantly concealed and does not looks obtrusive. On the backside, we have a camera, a tiny Flash, and two vents for speakers.

Plam Pixi, actually improves the look and feel from the previous Palm Pre. The Pixi has removed the Physical Center button and adds a LED slit that works just like a button. Palm Pixi measures just 0.43 inches in thickness that adds to its sexiness, thinner than iPhone.

Design and Internals

Palm Pixi is the downgraded version of Palm Pre looking fron the inside. It uses Qualcomm MSM7627 processor clocked to 600Mhz instead of, OMAP3 CPU that Pre uses. It helps Palm cut down on size and battery drain. The difference in the performance between the two phones is noticeable. The Plam Pixi has 8GB of ROM and 256 MB of RAM. It has EVDO Rev A for voice and data applications. Interestingly wifi is missing, something that would have been a desirable feature for many. It also has a 2 Megapixel camera with LED Flash. It also has an accelerometer, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor. The accelerometer helps the detection of the mobile phone movement and orientation.

The phone therefore has a good look and feel, however, on the negative side has slower processor and the missing wifi is a cause of concern for many.

Display and Keyboard

The LCD screen of Pixi has a 2.63-inch screen with a resolution of 320 x 400. The webOS operating system ensures that the user interface can physically scale itself to fit screens of different resolutions. So even with a smaller resolution the webOS is able to make a webpage fit into the tiny space that can be zoomed if required. The color and clarity was good by not excellent. The Pixi uses 18 color as compared to 24 colors in Pre.

The most admirable feature in Pixi is the keyboard. This tiny QWERTY has been designed with some though to the real world typing – the height of the keys has been raised and the gap between the keys increase to make typing closer to real world. A definite plus of you compare it to typing in iPhone.

The Pixi takes decent quality photo with its 2 Megapixel camera. However, reducing the resolution from Palm Pre is not appreciated by the gadgets critics community. It would have been better had they retained the higher resolution camera used in Palm Pre. Also, if you wish to take videos, you are disappointed. Palm Pixi does not offer any video recording.

The battery life of Palm Pixi is good though not great. As for the price, Plam Pixi is only $50 less than Palm Pre and it therefore make Pre an alternative that people may like to consider.
