Apple has started  shipping out the at least Core i5-equipped versions of the 27-inch iMac. This is Apples’ first quad-core equipped consumer desktop. It has been listed in  quad-core Electronista  as “prepared for shipment”. The date of shipment has not been specified. It looks like the placement orders have been made.

The complete system has a specification pretty similar to that of the regular Core 2 Duo Model. Both have 2560×1440 display, 1TB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. However, they need different mainboard. This is becasue the i5 and i7 have built in memmory controllers and their pin out is differnet. The newer version uses more advanced Radeon HD 4850 graphics chipset.

The new orders for 27-inch Core 2 Duo models are can be delayed by seven to ten days. It looks like that quad cores are in great demand, causing shipment delays.
